A homeowner can choose from a variety of painting techniques to do on the walls to add quick style to a room. Some techniques in painting can make a DIY paint job look very professional.
Before any type of painting on your walls is started, you must make sure to be prepared. What this means is that all your supplies are ready, you’ve prepped your walls by filling in any cracks or holes, and you have taped off trim and windows with blue painter’s tape. Make sure that you get the special tools needed to accomplish the certain painting technique.
Rag Painting Technique
No paint brushes or rollers are used in the rag painting technique. Instead you can use a simple t-shirt or any type of cotton rag to apply paint to the wall. This technique will cause a marbled effect on the wall. To use the rag painting technique:
Douse the rag in paint, making sure to shake off the excess.
The rag should then be dabbed onto the wall, applying paint in any pattern you want: however, make sure that you don’t spread the pattern too much.
You can apply a darker base color and then rag on a lighter color for a more creative touch.
Sponge Painting Technique
Sponging or sponge painting is a technique used for giving walls depth and interest. A base color will need to be applied to the wall before you can sponge paint it. For the sponge painting technique:
Take a regular sponge or sea sponge and immerse it into any paint or glaze of your choice.
Begin on the outside of one of the walls and dab your sponge in a random manner.
If you feel like only completing one wall, or completing all the walls with sponge painting you can, it’s your choice.
Color Washing Technique
If you want a subtle finish that gives the appearance of floating color, then color washing is your technique. If you have walls with many flaws that you want to hide, this is a great technique. This technique can take a little more time than the other since you need to build up layers for the full effect. To use the color washing technique:
Use a base color you want for your wall and wait for it to dry.
Then return to the wall with another color that is slightly different or complimentary to the base and paint another layer.
This layer of paint should only be done with a paint brush, applying the paint in all different directions, going back over previous strokes so that the base color shows in random areas.
More than one layer of painting can be done in this manner if you want another color to show on the walls as well.
These painting techniques can be used in any room, from a bathroom to living room. From a bathroom to a living room, any of these techniques can be used in any single room. Not only are they a great way to add style to the walls, but they will also help liven up the room.
