Corporate and commercial banking is typically reserved for businesses and major company’s that require a large amount of cash to be handled in terms of making change, getting cashiers checks or loans for items a business or corporation would need.

Commercial banking is usually for local businesses that are considered small businesses or companies that do not require large sums of cash or will be making large loan payments or deposits.

A bank that handles personal financial needs for individuals and families will not be able to accommodate the complex analytical regulations or detailed tools of the trade a corporate banker will use to help a larger corporation with their financial requirements.

Taking risks to ensure success is what a corporation will need and that is why they turn to a corporate bank and their risk management team of experts. Helping to diminish a corporations risk from a cash standpoint is what the corporation banking is all about.

With a commercial bank, a business usually gains funds or interest on their money through term deposits or time deposits. A term deposit is when a company or business makes a considerable deposit into a commercial banking institution; they will not be able to withdrawal the funds for a period of time or a term, thus earning money while the bank uses that money to lend to other companies and businesses.

There are a number of things a commercial banking institution could do to help a small business with such financial needs as issuing bank drafts or checks; receiving term deposits; providing safe deposit boxes for the secure storage of confidential documents and other important papers; distribution, brokerage and sale of various insurance needs; treasury services; merchant banking; cash management and unit trusts.

Working capital is the title given to what a corporate banker or banking center that deals with corporations only could do for a corporate institution. They could set up and deal with different short-term situations that require financial discretion like organizing insurance and investments that are smaller sums of cash and only for shorter periods of time. Capital investments are what a corporate bank calls the long-term financial needs of a corporation and would include fixed assets and capital structures.

Not exactly like loans, corporate banks offer corporate bonds to corporations that qualify or have good credit. Issuing a bond is like a marker for cash. A corporation that wants to raise money for improvements or adding new merchandise to their catalog will often go to a bank with a corporate bond for cash with a maturity date that is past the one year anniversary of the bonds set up date.

Small businesses or companies are unable to handle corporate bonds so they must take out traditional style loans in order to receive the working capital they want for items they need to grow their business. Some of these loans are unsecured which means there is no collateral put up in case of default, however, others are secured loans and will need a piece of collateral such as a building or fleet of vehicles.

There are several differences in corporate and commercial banking and not only in the volume of business and money they deal with, but in the size of the financial institutions themselves.
