Chiropractic doctors, according to the American Chiropractic Association, “have a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to the biomechanics, structure and function of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health. A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.”
Chiropractic care is administered to treat and prevent pain and disorders pertaining to the musculoskeletal system that controls the body’s movement, including the spine. Chiropractic care is often sought as a form of alternative medicine and complementary care to coincide with traditional medical treatments. Many cancer patients elect to visit a chiropractor as part of their treatment regimen, including those suffering from asbestos-related cancers like mesothelioma.
Asbestos is a naturally produced mineral that was used in multiple military and industrial settings throughout the 20th century. If exposed to asbestos it can cause a rare and aggressive cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma’s symptoms can take as long as 50 years to appear. Usually the cancer is advanced and common treatment options are limited by this time.
There were two published studies in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that examined the cases of two cancer patients. The first case involved a 54-year-old man that was diagnosed with lung cancer, which is often associated with asbestos exposure. One year after surgery, the man experienced only miniscule pain relief and decided to visit a chiropractor. Upon his first visit the man had rapid pain relief and after just two visits he discontinued the use of his pain medications.
Those who strongly believe in the body’s ability to heal itself and mesothelioma patients who are seeking alternative care will find chiropractic treatment especially of interest. In order to make the cancer treatment process more comfortable for the patients, chiropractic services can be used to alleviate severe headaches or migranes and movement pains.
